Downtown Charleston/Peninsula

Situated at the confluence of the Ashley River and Cooper River, Historic Downtown Charleston is a National Historic Landmark District known for its stunning collection of 18th and 19th century architecture including uniquely distinctive Charleston “Single Houses”.  Cobblestone streets, private gardens, massive live oaks and historic homes abound in this gracious area of the city.  From the sweeping Charleston Harbor views at White Point Gardens to the unparalleled shopping and dining along King Street, to the Pineapple Fountain of Waterfront Park in the French Quarter, this area of the city is what most folks think of when they think of Charleston.

However, just beyond the main historic district of you’ll find a cluster of thriving neighborhoods with historic significance, an eye on the future and modern flair of their own.

Just north of the French Quarter and the historic City Market is the charming neighborhood of Ansonborough. Known for its stately townhouses, this neighborhood offers a residential feel with neighborhood shops, bars, restaurants and a few hotels.  A great neighborhood for walking or biking with quick access to the French Quarter, this neighborhood is a great example of modern living in a historic area.

Home to the verdant campus of the College of Charleston, Harleston Village is a district punctuated by stately homes, churches and hotels. Along the northwest edge of the district, the campus of the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) leads the region in innovative healthcare and features everything from modern condos to charming single family homes. Along the eastern edge of the medical district is Radcliffeborough, a vibrant area populated largely by students and professors.  Visitors and residents alike enjoy a stroll through Marion Square, a relaxing block of greenspace that has served the city in numerous capacities throughout history but is now a public park and site of the Charleston Farmers Market.  With convenient access to MUSC and the College of Charleston, this walkable neighborhood is in close proximity to shopping, dining and nightlife.

The Elliotborough Cannonborough neighborhood is known for the quintessential Charleston Single Home and draws young professionals, students and staff from nearby College of Charleston and MUSC.  Perfect for creatives and foodies, this neighborhood is dotted with unique boutiques, trendy restaurants, bakeries and bars, offering a relaxed lifestyle in the heart of the peninsula.

Westside and Hampton Park Terrace are great neighborhoods for those seeking a strong community atmosphere. Offering wide diversity in home styles, you can find anything from a craftsman style home or bungalow to a waterfront condo overlooking the Ashley River.  In close proximity to community events and greenspace, this neighborhood emphasizes enjoying the outdoors with family & friends. Hampton Park is one of the city’s largest parks with trails, picnic areas and lots of greenspace for gathering, while Brittlebank Park provides playgrounds, community fishing/crabbing piers and an off-leash dog park.  Sunset baseball games at Joe Riley Stadium are a favorite, while dropping by neighborhood restaurants and cafes is part of the daily routine.  This area is also home to the Citadel Military College, one of the top 6 senior military colleges in the nation and ranked #1 Public College in the South.

Young and hip is the vibe of Wagener Terrace. Popular with young professionals and families alike, this neighborhood features homes built in the early to mid 20th century.  Anchored by the family friendly Corinne Jones Playground the neighborhood also features a laid-back nightlife scene with craft beer bars, microbreweries and bars with live music. Foodies also love this neighborhood for its upscale-casual restaurants known for serving eclectic American cuisine.

East Central/NoMo embraces an urban feel at a comfortable scale.  Just a short bike ride or drive outside of the historic and residential districts, East Central has emerged as a technology sector alongside innovative restaurants and breweries.  While the outlook of this neighborhood is thoroughly modern, it wouldn’t be Charleston without a direct nod to the past.  Homes in this area reflect this sensibility as you will find Queen Anne style, Charleston Singles, Freedman’s Cottages and Greek Revivals all at harmony with modern townhouses and condos.
