West Ashley

Eclectic and energetic, charming and laid-back West Ashley is a popular choice to put down roots in the Charleston area.  Most of West Ashley is located within Charleston city limits, but lies just across the Ashley River from Historic Downtown Charleston making this district feel like a self-contained town.  Offering a great mix of well-established neighborhoods and new construction communities at a wide range of prices, West Ashley is a popular choice for those wishing to enjoy the perks of living in an established yet continuously revitalizing area.  Whether you are looking for a cozy townhome, brick bungalow, contemporary new-build or creekside estate, you’ll find lots of options and styles.

Highly accessible to the Tri-County region, West Ashley’s location is just 20 minutes from Charleston International Airport and affords residents convenient access to Historic Downtown Charleston as well as Mount Pleasant, North Charleston and Summerville via 526 and I-26.  In fact, 526 is known as an unofficial divider of this area, linking the more established neighborhoods closer to Downtown Charleston with the newer up-and-coming developments further in.  The area “Inside” of 526 is where you’ll find many of West Ashley’s original neighborhoods with charming brick homes on spacious lots and lush mature landscaping.  The popular neighborhood of Avondale is a highlight for its fusion restaurants, lively pubs and trendy boutiques and shops. “Outside” of 526, an array of larger, master-planned communities offers amenities like pools, dog-parks, playgrounds and greenspace within close proximity to large stores, restaurants and entertainment.  West Ashley also boasts top-rated schools, the state-of-the-art Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital and Citadel Mall, further adding to its thriving growth and family-friendly atmosphere.  With a wide array of grocery stores, major retailers, car dealerships and health services, residents enjoy everything they need within a stone’s throw from their door.

Flanked by the Ashley & Stono Rivers, West Ashley also offers access to local marshes, creeks and scenic water views.  Residents enjoy convenient proximity to numerous outdoor amenities including public boat launches, local parks, greenspaces and the West Ashley Greenway.  Over 8 miles in length, the trail is a year-round recreation spot for walkers, runners, skaters and cyclists.  You can also be at the beaches of Folly, Sullivan’s Island, Isle of Palms or Kiawah Island within 30 to 40 minutes.

As with most neighborhoods in the Charleston Tri-County area, the rich history of the Carolina Lowcountry is always present.  The land which present-day West Ashley occupies is known as the birthplace of Charleston and features some of its most noteworthy sites.  Home to the first permanent settlement and dating back to 1670, Charles Towne Landing is a 184 acre park featuring miles of trails through the original settlement, an Animal Forest natural habitat zoo, interactive exhibits, gardens, live oak alley and the elegant historic Legare Waring House.  A drive up the historic Ashley River Road is like stepping back in time with its moss-draped live oak trees and the historic plantations of Magnolia Place, Drayton Hall and Middleton Place. All three sites preserve and educate about past generations while hosting cultural and entertainment events for the present-day local community.
